Is my dog Satanic?

Postby cre8ivmind on Wed Aug 20, 2008 5:37 am

I haven't posted in a while, and I know this is going to sound crazy, but...

I've had my dog for about a year now, and she has destroyed two books several months apart. Both of them happen to be Bibles. I have dozens of other books my dog could have decided to destroy, but she only chose the Bibles. Is this just a coincidence, or could there be some kind of demonic influence?

I don't want to come off glib here, but I doubt that you dog is satanic. I'm sure it's coincidence...

Why did the dog choose those two books? To that question I'm unsure but, if I were a dog, I could probably tell you with the utmost certainty. Perhaps it has something to do with nothing other than the smell of the books (are they leather?), or maybe (if you read your bible every day), maybe the dog is acting out in jealous defiance. It's really hard to guess at the why, but chances are this is just a phase.

What is important is how you responded to your dog. How did you discipline your dog for his behavior when you realized he had chewed on an object that he was not allowed to chew on? (psst, the dog holds no value of what's written inside the book, his only concern or draw is sight, smell, texture and taste.) Personally, I would have picked up the dog, carried or drug him to the chew site, held his snout, looked him in the eye and spoke firmly to him. Then, I would have picked up the book that he had chewed and gave him a good whack with it while saying "NO" making sure he was in submission.

Hope that doesn't sound mean, but dog's aren't people.

Might just be the availability of bibles...out of all my books, those seem to lay off off the bookshelf the most. Or maybe the bibles smelled like after-church potlucks :) .

LOL@skunk! Maybe the dog is Baptist and thought they were "fellowship leftovers". 8-)

My guess is smell and proximity to the dog. It could be spite or jealousy, I just don't have all the facts or know the circumstances.

Hope that doesn't sound mean, but dog's aren't people

That wasn't cruel, Jeff. That was spot on the way to deal with it. :-) Eye contact, a firm voice and very short sentences with small words are the key. When my cat has been bad, he gets a form "NO, Opie bad" (Opie is his name) and I stare him down until he looks away and backs off. It's what they do in the wild.

Sometimes I will call him a pest or weasel. :-D Depending on my tone of voice, he knows if I'm mad or not. 8-)

It could just be a bored Dog with an opportunity. My housemate just got a dog and I've been taking care of her this week. She's a 10 month old pup who really isn't house broken yet. If she's bored and needs something to do, she will find something to rip apart.

So, I shouldn’t say to my dog,

“Your pedantic behavior and esoteric deeds are utterly atrocious and reek of diabolical innuendo. Now then, cease from acting like an ogre and be the domesticated canine as expected.”

Your dog is Catholic, and could not understand why your Bible has 66 books instead of 73. So she destroyed them thinking they were a fraud. And she told my dog, that she would do it again.

There are demonic influences everywhere but I dont think we should attribute everything to them. Your dog is just bored. If he was demonic boy you would know about it. It wouldn't just be your bibles he was tearing apart.
Take care

If the covers are made of hide, it could be considered by your dog as a tasty treat.

My dog Binki Boo heard through the grape vine, that he heard another dog while eating out, and over heard that your dog said that she was trying to fill herself with the Word.......and since she can't read, she figured that was the best way to do it. She said her owner fills themselves with the Word so why can't she.

Oh well, I just thought I would pass that along so you know. :onfire: She said it put a fire in her bones. But she said since you don't let her chase chickens :smt117 wellll that was the only alternative she has. Hope this helps! :smt118

If it makes you feel a bit better, My Housemate's dog chew up a book on grace today. It was by Spurgeon too...Maybe this means she is Arminian?

I definitely agree. I think you are reading way too much into this. I honestly believe that your dog just wanted to chew up a book. Your Bible was probably in reach of him when he chewed that book. I mean, if he saw another book before your Bible, he would tear that up.

But if you truly do believe your dog is "satanic", pray to God about it. But I think you are reading toooo much into this.
